Thanks to the magic of dance, the unparalleled atmosphere of “Ballando Ballando,” the film made in 1983 by Ettore Scola, the great master of Italian cinema who recently passed away, lives again in Ballades, a choreography by Claudio Ronda, created by the Compagnia Fabula Saltica. The true protagonist of the staging is the ballroom, here restored, as an image, by essential furnishings. Space is left for the audience that frequents it, and for musical atmospheres that allow the couple’s engagement, performance and fusion. It is an ideal setting to accommodate and narrate the behaviors, expectations and desire for ostentation of ordinary people. People gather in dance halls on Saturday nights, or on holidays, to escape the daily dreariness, to dream and love, to put on a mask, and to transform themselves into the absolute protagonists of their own existence. One enacts the character one intends to play from time to time, while the flow of time absorbs and blurs everything. Through a narrative that is poetic and playful, sensual and full of irony, Ballades’ choreography explores every corner of this ageless universe. It is a small world where, conveyed by dance, expectations and hopes, illusions and disappointments, encounters and stories, passions and indifference, one-night stands and little and big intrigues come to life. All of this is underscored by the melodies of a little orchestra, which, as is in the best Italian tradition, discreetly accompanies the staging, adapts to the moods of the guests, follows the emotional tensions, and gives voice to the expectations of those who, through it, want to express the desire to know and be known. Paolo Zambelli’s music draws on the folk tradition of waltz, tango and mazurka, and is enriched with modern sounds related to jazz and rock. The rhythm that is produced, tight and engaging, enhances the energy of the dances, and becomes complicit with the theatrical play. The performance has been described by specialized critics as intelligent, refined, and full of charm.
